France

This fortnight the story of France concentrates on Frejus, a small town on the Riviera between Cannes and St. Tropez but miles apart from both.

Without the glitz of either of its two closest neighbours, Frejus has survived as a small village on the beautiful Cote d'Azur. Remarkably, its best part is the central town square 3 km from the plage.

The cathedral walls limit the width of the inner streets and a large car is certainly no use. The charm of its inhabitants cannot be described without first witnessing its charm.

Imagine just the one image: the site of the mairie on July 14th, with the sun beating down on the bright orange paint and the Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite, shining in the stone, set off by the bleu, blanc, rouge.

And then a shutter opens and someone yells out to you, "Vive la France.' And then a pause. "Vive tout le monde."
